Utah State Flower Gear – Sego Lily
This isn’t just a state flower. It’s a story you can wear.
The Story Behind the Flower
The sego lily holds deep meaning in Utah’s history, particularly for the pioneers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who settled the region in the mid-1800s.
During times of extreme hardship and food shortages, these pioneers relied on the edible bulbs of the sego lily for nourishment. The flower became a symbol of survival, faith, and perseverance in the face of uncertainty.
In 1911, the sego lily was officially adopted as Utah’s state flower, honoring its role in sustaining early settlers and its lasting place in the state’s story.
