The Story Behind the Flower
In 1892, Washington didn’t yet have an official state flower. As plans were underway for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, state organizers wanted a floral emblem to represent Washington.
Rather than having politicians decide, the vote was opened to women across the state. Thousands participated, and the Pacific rhododendron won by a wide margin.
Long before women had the right to vote in national elections, Washington women helped choose a symbol that would represent the state for generations.
