The violet became Rhode Island’s state flower in 1968, following a decision that began decades earlier with the voices of schoolchildren across the state.
In the late 1800s, students were invited to vote on a state flower, choosing the violet over other candidates. Their choice reflected a flower they knew well. One that grew naturally around them and marked the arrival of spring each year.
Though it took many years for the decision to become official, the violet remained the people’s choice. Small, familiar, and easy to find, it became a lasting symbol of Rhode Island shaped by the voices of its youngest residents.
