Ohio State Flower Gear – Scarlet Carnation
This isn’t just a state flower. It’s a story you can wear.
The Story Behind the Flower
The scarlet carnation became Ohio’s state flower in 1904, chosen in honor of William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States and a native of Ohio.
McKinley was known for wearing a red carnation on his lapel as a personal symbol, and the flower became closely associated with him throughout his life. After his assassination in 1901, Ohio selected the scarlet carnation as a tribute to his legacy and the impact he left on the state.
Bold in color and easy to recognize, the scarlet carnation reflects both remembrance and pride, tying Ohio’s identity to a figure who shaped its history.
